Burying Our Weapons of Rebellion

Elder D. Todd Christofferson

Elder Christofferson invites us to abandon all forms of rebellion against God, whether active or passive. Drawing on the example of the Lamanites from the Book of Mormon, he emphasizes the importance of sincere repentance, replacing sinful desires with love for God. By doing so, we can experience lasting peace and joy through aligning our lives with God’s will.

The Example of the Lamanites

Elder Christofferson highlights the story of the Lamanites, who not only gave up their weapons of war but also laid down their rebellion against God. This full conversion is presented as a model of sincere repentance and enduring faithfulness. He explains how repentance can purify us and lead to peace.

“For they became a righteous people; they did lay down the weapons of their rebellion, that they did not fight against God any more, neither against any of their brethren.”

Scriptural references for further study:

  • Alma 23:7: “For they became a righteous people; they did lay down the weapons of their rebellion, that they did not fight against God any more, neither against any of their brethren.”
  • Alma 24:19: “And they began to be a very industrious people; yea, and they were friendly with the Nephites; therefore, they did open a correspondence with them, and the curse of God did no more follow them.”

Active Rebellion vs. Passive Rebellion

Active rebellion, like Lucifer’s, is a direct opposition to God’s will, while passive rebellion is more subtle, where individuals prioritize their own desires over divine guidance. Both forms separate us from God but can be overcome through repentance and humble obedience.

“The more insidious form of rebellion against God, however, is the passive version—ignoring His will in our lives.”

Scriptural references for further study:

  • 2 Nephi 9:28: “O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God.”
  • Mosiah 3:19: “For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit…”

Personal Weapons of Rebellion

Elder Christofferson urges us to examine our lives and identify personal “weapons” of rebellion, which may be attitudes, actions, or habits that distance us from God. While some of these may seem harmless, they can prevent us from fully embracing discipleship if left unchecked.

“Our speech, for example, can edify or demean. As James said: ‘Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.’”

Scriptural references for further study:

  • James 3:8-10: “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.”
  • Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

The Process of Change and Conversion

Elder Christofferson teaches that true conversion requires a complete change of heart, where we not only cease sinning but also lose the desire for sin. This transformation is made possible through the Atonement of Jesus Christ as we let God’s will prevail in our lives.

“It means putting the first commandment first in our lives. It means letting God prevail.”

Scriptural references for further study:

  • Doctrine and Covenants 64:34: “Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.”
  • Alma 26:12: “Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God…”
